Details
A vulnerability was found in Apache ORC up to 1.8.8/1.9.5/2.0.4/2.1.1. It has been declared as critical. Affected by this vulnerability is an unknown code block of the component C++ LZO Decompression. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a heap-based overflow vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-122. A heap overflow condition is a buffer overflow, where the buffer that can be overwritten is allocated in the heap portion of memory, generally meaning that the buffer was allocated using a routine such as malloc(). As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:
Heap-based Buffer Overflow vulnerability in Apache ORC. A vulnerability has been identified in the ORC C++ LZO decompression logic, where specially crafted malformed ORC files can cause the decompressor to allocate a 250-byte buffer but then attempts to copy 295 bytes into it. It causes memory corruption. This issue affects Apache ORC C++ library: through 1.8.8, from 1.9.0 through 1.9.5, from 2.0.0 through 2.0.4, from 2.1.0 through 2.1.1. Users are recommended to upgrade to version 1.8.9, 1.9.6, 2.0.5, and 2.1.2, which fix the issue.
The advisory is shared at lists.apache.org. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2025-47436 since 05/07/2025. The exploitation appears to be easy. Neither technical details nor an exploit are publicly available. The price for an exploit might be around USD $0-$5k at the moment (estimation calculated on 07/14/2025).
Upgrading to version 1.8.9, 1.9.6, 2.0.5 or 2.1.2 eliminates this vulnerability.
The vulnerability is also documented in the vulnerability database at EUVD (EUVD-2025-14947). Several companies clearly confirm that VulDB is the primary source for best vulnerability data.
