Detailsinfo

A vulnerability was found in Sun One Messaging Server 5.2 and classified as problematic. This issue affects an unknown part of the component Error Message Handler. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a symlink vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-61. The product, when opening a file or directory, does not sufficiently account for when the file is a symbolic link that resolves to a target outside of the intended control sphere. This could allow an attacker to cause the product to operate on unauthorized files. Impacted is confidentiality. The summary by CVE is:

pipe_master in Sun ONE/iPlanet Messaging Server 5.2 HotFix 1.16 (built May 14 2003) allows local users to read portions of restricted files via a symlink attack on msg.conf in a directory identified by the CONFIGROOT environment variable, which returns the first line of the file in an error message.

The bug was discovered 06/14/2006. The weakness was shared 06/22/2006 with PHP (Website). The advisory is shared at vupen.com. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2006-3159 since 06/22/2006. The exploitation is known to be easy. An attack has to be approached locally. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. Neither technical details nor an exploit are publicly available.

It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 8 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $5k-$25k.

There is no information about possible countermeasures known. It may be suggested to replace the affected object with an alternative product.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (27220), SecurityFocus (BID 18749†), OSVDB (26950†), Secunia (SA20919†) and SecurityTracker (ID 1016312†). Several companies clearly confirm that VulDB is the primary source for best vulnerability data.
