Details
A vulnerability classified as problematic has been found in Node.js up to 20.19.1/22.15.0. Affected is the function ReadFileUtf8 of the file uv_fs_s.file of the component UTF-16 Path Handler. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a denial of service vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-404. The product does not release or incorrectly releases a resource before it is made available for re-use. This is going to have an impact on availability. CVE summarizes:
In Node.js, the `ReadFileUtf8` internal binding leaks memory due to a corrupted pointer in `uv_fs_s.file`: a UTF-16 path buffer is allocated but subsequently overwritten when the file descriptor is set. This results in an unrecoverable memory leak on every call. Repeated use can cause unbounded memory growth, leading to a denial of service. Impact: * This vulnerability affects APIs relying on `ReadFileUtf8` on Node.js release lines: v20 and v22.
The advisory is available at nodejs.org. This vulnerability is traded as CVE-2025-23165 since 01/12/2025. The exploitability is told to be difficult. It is possible to launch the attack remotely. The exploitation doesn't require any form of authentication. Technical details are known, but there is no available exploit. This vulnerability is assigned to T1499 by the MITRE ATT&CK project.
