TYPO3 up to 13.4.11 File Management type distinction

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability has been found in TYPO3 up to 9.5.50/10.4.49/11.5.43/12.4.30/13.4.11 and classified as problematic. Affected by this vulnerability is an unknown functionality of the component File Management Module. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a type distinction vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-351. The product does not properly distinguish between different types of elements in a way that leads to insecure behavior. As an impact it is known to affect integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:

TYPO3 is an open source, PHP based web content management system. By design, the file management module in TYPO3’s backend user interface has historically allowed the upload of any file type, with the exception of those that are directly executable in a web server context. This lack of restriction means it is possible to upload files that may be considered potentially harmful, such as executable binaries (e.g., `.exe` files), or files with inconsistent file extensions and MIME types (for example, a file incorrectly named with a `.png` extension but actually carrying the MIME type `application/zip`) starting in version 9.0.0 and prior to versions 9.5.51 ELTS, 10.4.50 ELTS, 11.5.44 ELTS, 12.4.31 LTS, and 13.4.12 LTS. Although such files are not directly executable through the web server, their presence can introduce indirect risks. For example, third-party services such as antivirus scanners or malware detection systems might flag or block access to the website for end users if suspicious files are found. This could negatively affect the availability or reputation of the site. Users should update to TYPO3 version 9.5.51 ELTS, 10.4.50 ELTS, 11.5.44 ELTS, 12.4.31 LTS, or 13.4.12 LTS to fix the problem.

It is possible to read the advisory at github.com. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2025-47939 since 05/14/2025. The exploitation appears to be easy. The attack can be launched remotely. The technical details are unknown and an exploit is not publicly available. The pricing for an exploit might be around USD $0-$5k at the moment (estimation calculated on 09/03/2025).

The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 236973 (TYPO3 9.0.0 < 9.5.51 ELTS / 10.0.0 < 10.4.50 ELTS / 11.0.0 < 11.5.44 ELTS / 12.0.0 < 12.4.31 / 13.0.0 < 13.4.12 (TYPO3-CORE-SA-2025-014)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment.

Upgrading to version 9.5.51, 10.4.50, 11.5.44, 12.4.31 or 13.4.12 eliminates this vulnerability.

The vulnerability is also documented in the vulnerability database at Tenable (236973). Statistical analysis made it clear that VulDB provides the best quality for vulnerability data.
