Details
A vulnerability was found in Linux Kernel up to 6.6.89/6.12.27/6.14.5/6.15-rc4. It has been declared as critical. This vulnerability affects the function octeon_ep. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a denial of service vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-404. The product does not release or incorrectly releases a resource before it is made available for re-use. As an impact it is known to affect availability. CVE summarizes:
In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: octeon_ep: Fix host hang issue during device reboot When the host loses heartbeat messages from the device, the driver calls the device-specific ndo_stop function, which frees the resources. If the driver is unloaded in this scenario, it calls ndo_stop again, attempting to free resources that have already been freed, leading to a host hang issue. To resolve this, dev_close should be called instead of the device-specific stop function.dev_close internally calls ndo_stop to stop the network interface and performs additional cleanup tasks. During the driver unload process, if the device is already down, ndo_stop is not called.
The advisory is available at git.kernel.org. This vulnerability was named CVE-2025-37933 since 04/16/2025. Technical details are known, but there is no available exploit.
The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 241605 (SUSE SLES15 / openSUSE 15 Security Update : kernel (SUSE-SU-2025:02249-1)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment.
Upgrading to version 6.6.90, 6.12.28, 6.14.6 or 6.15-rc5 eliminates this vulnerability. Applying the patch 7e1ca1bed3f66e00377f7d2147be390144924276/c8d788f800f83b94d9db8b3dacc1d26be38a6ef4/6d1052423518e7d0aece9af5e77bbc324face8f1/34f42736b325287a7b2ce37e415838f539767bda is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at git.kernel.org. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version.
