Details
A vulnerability, which was classified as critical, has been found in Linux Kernel up to 6.12.24/6.14.3/6.15-rc2. This issue affects the function set_page_dirty_lock. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a buffer overflow vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-120. The product copies an input buffer to an output buffer without verifying that the size of the input buffer is less than the size of the output buffer, leading to a buffer overflow. Impacted is confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:
In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: block: integrity: Do not call set_page_dirty_lock() Placing multiple protection information buffers inside the same page can lead to oopses because set_page_dirty_lock() can't be called from interrupt context. Since a protection information buffer is not backed by a file there is no point in setting its page dirty, there is nothing to synchronize. Drop the call to set_page_dirty_lock() and remove the last argument to bio_integrity_unpin_bvec().
The advisory is shared at git.kernel.org. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2025-37978 since 04/16/2025. The exploitation is known to be easy. Technical details are known, but no exploit is available. The price for an exploit might be around USD $0-$5k at the moment (estimation calculated on 12/14/2025).
The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 238279 (Amazon Linux 2023 : bpftool, kernel6.12, kernel6.12-modules-extra (ALAS2023-2025-995)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment.
Upgrading to version 6.12.25, 6.14.4 or 6.15-rc3 eliminates this vulnerability. Applying the patch c38a005e6efb9ddfa06bd8353b82379d6fd5d6c4/9487fc1a10b3aa89feb24e7cedeccaaf63074617/39e160505198ff8c158f11bce2ba19809a756e8b is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at git.kernel.org. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version.
The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at Tenable (238279) and CERT Bund (WID-SEC-2025-1114). If you want to get the best quality for vulnerability data then you always have to consider VulDB.
