Details
A vulnerability was found in GitLab Community Edition and Enterprise Edition up to 17.10.6/17.11.2/18.0.0. It has been classified as problematic. Affected is an unknown part of the component WebUI. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a insufficient granularity of access control vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-1220. The product implements access controls via a policy or other feature with the intention to disable or restrict accesses (reads and/or writes) to assets in a system from untrusted agents. However, implemented access controls lack required granularity, which renders the control policy too broad because it allows accesses from unauthorized agents to the security-sensitive assets. This is going to have an impact on confidentiality. CVE summarizes:
An issue has been discovered in GitLab CE/EE affecting all versions before 17.10.7, 17.11 before 17.11.3, and 18.0 before 18.0.1. An attacker may be able to reveal masked or hidden CI variables (that they did not author) in the WebUI, by simply creating their own variable and observing the HTTP response.
The advisory is shared for download at gitlab.com. This vulnerability is traded as CVE-2025-4979 since 05/20/2025. The exploitability is told to be easy. It is possible to launch the attack remotely. Additional levels of successful authentication are needed for exploitation. There are neither technical details nor an exploit publicly available.
