Unspecified vulnerability in inetd in Sun Solaris 10 before 20070529 allows local users to cause a denial of service (daemon termination) via unspecified manipulations of the /var/run/.inetd.uds Unix domain socket file.
The issue has been introduced in 01/31/2005. The weakness was published 05/30/2007 by shutdown with Sun (Website). The advisory is shared for download at sunsolve.sun.com. This vulnerability was named CVE-2007-2990 since 05/31/2007. Access to the local network is required for this attack to succeed. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. There are known technical details, but no exploit is available.
It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 849 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $5k-$25k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 25393 (Solaris 10 (x86) : 121289-04), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Solaris Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 115563 (Sun Solaris inetd Denial of Service Vulnerability).
Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability. Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at sunsolve.sun.com. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version.
