A vulnerability, which was classified as problematic, has been found in Sun Solaris 8.0/9.0/10.0 (Operating System). This issue affects some unknown processing of the component Management Console. Unspecified vulnerability in the logging mechanism in Solaris Management Console (SMC) on Sun Solaris 8 through 10 before 20070605 allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary code via unspecified vectors, related to the WBEM server.
The bug was discovered 06/05/2007. The weakness was disclosed 06/06/2007 by Adam Gowdiak with Security Explorations (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at sunsolve.sun.com. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2007-3093 since 06/06/2007. Access to the local network is required for this attack to succeed. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. The technical details are unknown and an exploit is not publicly available.
It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 16089 (Solaris 9 (sparc) : 112945-46), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Solaris Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 115586 (Sun Solaris Management Console Privilege Escalation Vulnerability).
Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability. Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at sunsolve.sun.com. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version. A possible mitigation has been published even before and not after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
