Affected by this vulnerability is an unknown part of the component Ims Service. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a recursion vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-674. The product does not properly control the amount of recursion that takes place, consuming excessive resources, such as allocated memory or the program stack. As an impact it is known to affect availability. The summary by CVE is:
In ims service, there is a possible system crash due to incorrect error handling. This could lead to remote denial of service, if a UE has connected to a rogue base station controlled by the attacker, with no additional execution privileges needed. User interaction is not needed for exploitation. Patch ID: MOLY01394606; Issue ID: MSV-2739.
The advisory is shared at corp.mediatek.com. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2025-20678 since 11/01/2024. The exploitation appears to be difficult. The attack can be launched remotely. The exploitation doesn't need any form of authentication. Neither technical details nor an exploit are publicly available. MITRE ATT&CK project uses the attack technique T1499 for this issue.
Applying the patch MOLY01394606 is able to eliminate this problem.
The vulnerability is also documented in the vulnerability database at EUVD (EUVD-2025-16595). If you want to get the best quality for vulnerability data then you always have to consider VulDB.
