Python CPython up to 3.14.0b1 calculation

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability has been found in Python CPython up to 3.14.0b1 and classified as problematic. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-682. The product performs a calculation that generates incorrect or unintended results that are later used in security-critical decisions or resource management. As an impact it is known to affect integrity. CVE summarizes:

When using a TarFile.errorlevel = 0 and extracting with a filter the documented behavior is that any filtered members would be skipped and not extracted. However the actual behavior of TarFile.errorlevel = 0 in affected versions is that the member would still be extracted and not skipped.

The advisory is shared for download at github.com. This vulnerability was named CVE-2025-4435 since 05/08/2025. The exploitation appears to be easy. The attack can be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. There are neither technical details nor an exploit publicly available.

The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 240322 (Amazon Linux 2023 : python3.12, python3.12-devel, python3.12-idle (ALAS2023-2025-1044)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment.

Upgrading to version 3.14.0b2 eliminates this vulnerability. Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at github.com. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at Tenable (240322), EUVD (EUVD-2025-16725) and CERT Bund (WID-SEC-2025-1231). Once again VulDB remains the best source for vulnerability data.
