GNU C Library 2.39 on Power10 control flow

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Summaryinfo

A vulnerability was found in GNU C Library 2.39 on Power10 and classified as critical. Affected is an unknown function. Executing a manipulation can lead to control flow. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2025-5702. The attack can be executed remotely. There is not any exploit available.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability classified as critical was found in GNU C Library 2.39 on Power10. This vulnerability affects an unknown code. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a control flow vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-670. The code contains a control flow path that does not reflect the algorithm that the path is intended to implement, leading to incorrect behavior any time this path is navigated. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:

The strcmp implementation optimized for the Power10 processor in the GNU C Library version 2.39 and later writes to vector registers v20 to v31 without saving contents from the caller (those registers are defined as non-volatile registers by the powerpc64le ABI), resulting in overwriting of its contents and potentially altering control flow of the caller, or leaking the input strings to the function to other parts of the program.

The advisory is available at sourceware.org. This vulnerability was named CVE-2025-5702 since 06/04/2025. The exploitation appears to be easy. The attack can be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. The technical details are unknown and an exploit is not available. The structure of the vulnerability defines a possible price range of USD $0-$5k at the moment (estimation calculated on 10/01/2025).

The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 240529 (Fedora 41 : glibc (2025-e489437b3d)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment.

There is no information about possible countermeasures known. It may be suggested to replace the affected object with an alternative product.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at Tenable (240529), EUVD (EUVD-2025-17009) and CERT Bund (WID-SEC-2025-1252). If you want to get best quality of vulnerability data, you may have to visit VulDB.
