A vulnerability, which was classified as critical, was found in Microsoft Office 2000/2003/Xp (Office Suite Software). This affects the function lscreateline in the library mso.dll. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. Buffer overflow in LsCreateLine function (mso_203) in mso.dll and mso9.dll, as used by Microsoft Word and possibly other products in Microsoft Office 2003, 2002, and 2000, allows remote user-assisted attackers to cause a denial of service (crash) via a crafted Word DOC or other Office file type. NOTE: this issue was originally reported to allow code execution, but on 20060710 Microsoft stated that code execution is not possible, and the original researcher agrees.
The bug was discovered 07/07/2006. The weakness was presented 07/10/2006 by naveed (Website). The advisory is shared at securityfocus.com. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2006-3493 since 07/10/2006. The exploitability is told to be difficult. It is possible to initiate the attack remotely. No form of authentication is needed for exploitation. Technical details and a public exploit are known.
A public exploit has been developed in ANSI C. The exploit is shared for download at securityfocus.com. It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 2590 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $5k-$25k.
