Summary
A vulnerability classified as critical has been found in Sony XAV-AX8500. Impacted is an unknown function of the component Bluetooth L2CAP Protocol Handler. Performing a manipulation results in heap-based overflow. This vulnerability is cataloged as CVE-2025-5477. The attack must originate from the local network. There is no exploit available. It is recommended to upgrade the affected component.
Details
A vulnerability, which was classified as critical, was found in Sony XAV-AX8500 (version now known). This affects some unknown processing of the component Bluetooth L2CAP Protocol Handler. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a heap-based overflow vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-122. A heap overflow condition is a buffer overflow, where the buffer that can be overwritten is allocated in the heap portion of memory, generally meaning that the buffer was allocated using a routine such as malloc(). This is going to have an impact on confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:
Sony XAV-AX8500 Bluetooth L2CAP Protocol Heap-based Buffer Overflow Remote Code Execution Vulnerability. This vulnerability allows network-adjacent attackers to execute arbitrary code on affected Sony XAV-AX8500 devices. An attacker must first obtain the ability to pair a malicious Bluetooth device with the target system in order to exploit this vulnerability. The specific flaw exists within the implementation of the Bluetooth L2CAP protocol. The issue results from the lack of proper validation of the length of user-supplied data prior to copying it to a heap-based buffer. An attacker can leverage this vulnerability to execute code in the context of the elysian-bt-service process. Was ZDI-CAN-26286.
It is possible to read the advisory at zerodayinitiative.com. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2025-5477 since 06/02/2025. The exploitability is told to be difficult. Access to the local network is required for this attack to succeed. No form of authentication is needed for exploitation. The technical details are unknown and an exploit is not publicly available. The pricing for an exploit might be around USD $5k-$25k at the moment (estimation calculated on 07/08/2025).
Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability.
