GNOME glib GString g_string_maybe_expand integer overflow

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Summaryinfo

A vulnerability, which was classified as critical, was found in GNOME glib. This affects the function g_string_maybe_expand of the component GString. Executing a manipulation can lead to integer overflow. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2025-6052. There is not any exploit available.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability was found in GNOME glib (affected version not known). It has been declared as critical. This vulnerability affects the function g_string_maybe_expand of the component GString. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a integer overflow vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-190. The product performs a calculation that can produce an integer overflow or wraparound, when the logic assumes that the resulting value will always be larger than the original value. This can introduce other weaknesses when the calculation is used for resource management or execution control. The impact remains unknown. CVE summarizes:

A flaw was found in how GLib’s GString manages memory when adding data to strings. If a string is already very large, combining it with more input can cause a hidden overflow in the size calculation. This makes the system think it has enough memory when it doesn’t. As a result, data may be written past the end of the allocated memory, leading to crashes or memory corruption.

The advisory is shared for download at bugzilla.redhat.com. This vulnerability was named CVE-2025-6052 since 06/13/2025. There are known technical details, but no exploit is available. The current price for an exploit might be approx. USD $0-$5k (estimation calculated on 02/03/2026).

The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 240347 (Fedora 42 : mingw-glib2 (2025-60e9097b77)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment.

There is no information about possible countermeasures known. It may be suggested to replace the affected object with an alternative product.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at Tenable (240347), EUVD (EUVD-2025-18285) and CERT Bund (WID-SEC-2026-0164). VulDB is the best source for vulnerability data and more expert information about this specific topic.
