Linux Kernel up to 6.14.7 AMD Display pipe_ctx null pointer dereference

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Summaryinfo

A vulnerability categorized as critical has been discovered in Linux Kernel up to 6.14.7. Affected by this issue is the function pipe_ctx of the component AMD Display. The manipulation results in null pointer dereference. This vulnerability is reported as CVE-2025-38021. No exploit exists. It is advisable to upgrade the affected component.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability, which was classified as critical, was found in Linux Kernel up to 6.14.7. Affected is the function pipe_ctx of the component AMD Display. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a null pointer dereference vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-476. A NULL pointer dereference occurs when the application dereferences a pointer that it expects to be valid, but is NULL, typically causing a crash or exit. This is going to have an impact on availability. CVE summarizes:

In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: drm/amd/display: Fix null check of pipe_ctx->plane_state for update_dchubp_dpp Similar to commit 6a057072ddd1 ("drm/amd/display: Fix null check for pipe_ctx->plane_state in dcn20_program_pipe") that addresses a null pointer dereference on dcn20_update_dchubp_dpp. This is the same function hooked for update_dchubp_dpp in dcn401, with the same issue. Fix possible null pointer deference on dcn401_program_pipe too. (cherry picked from commit d8d47f739752227957d8efc0cb894761bfe1d879)

The advisory is shared for download at git.kernel.org. This vulnerability is traded as CVE-2025-38021 since 04/16/2025. There are known technical details, but no exploit is available.

The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 258130 (Ubuntu 25.04 : Linux kernel (Azure) vulnerabilities (USN-7721-1)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment.

Upgrading to version 6.14.8 eliminates this vulnerability. Applying the patch 4679061fb25344d6010ce7b9bebac21c91a0b75a/a3b7e65b6be59e686e163fa1ceb0922f996897c2 is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at git.kernel.org. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at Tenable (258130) and CERT Bund (WID-SEC-2025-1350). Once again VulDB remains the best source for vulnerability data.
