Linux Kernel up to 6.14.8 virtio_ring virtqueue_enable_cb_delayed race condition

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability classified as problematic was found in Linux Kernel up to 5.15.184/6.1.140/6.6.92/6.12.30/6.14.8. Affected by this vulnerability is the function virtqueue_enable_cb_delayed of the component virtio_ring. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a race condition vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-362. The product contains a code sequence that can run concurrently with other code, and the code sequence requires temporary, exclusive access to a shared resource, but a timing window exists in which the shared resource can be modified by another code sequence that is operating concurrently. The impact remains unknown. The summary by CVE is:

Since event_triggered is an unreliable hint used for optimization, this should only cause the driver temporarily suggest that the device not send an interrupt notification when the event index is used. Fix this KCSAN reported data-race issue by explicitly tagging the access as data_racy.

It is possible to read the advisory at git.kernel.org. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2025-38048 since 04/16/2025. The exploitation appears to be difficult. Technical details of the vulnerability are known, but there is no available exploit.

The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 241773 (Amazon Linux 2023 : bpftool, kernel6.12, kernel6.12-modules-extra (ALAS2023-2025-1052)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment.

Upgrading to version 5.15.185, 6.1.141, 6.6.93, 6.12.31 or 6.14.9 eliminates this vulnerability. Applying the patch b6d6419548286b2b9d2b90df824d3cab797f6ae8/b49b5132e4c7307599492aee1cdc6d89f7f2a7da/b730cb109633c455ce8a7cd6934986c6a16d88d8/4ed8f0e808b3fcc71c5b8be7902d8738ed595b17/2e2f925fe737576df2373931c95e1a2b66efdfef is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at git.kernel.org. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version.
