Details
A vulnerability, which was classified as problematic, has been found in Linux Kernel up to 6.14.7. This issue affects the function nfs_local_open_fh of the component localio. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a race condition vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-362. The product contains a code sequence that can run concurrently with other code, and the code sequence requires temporary, exclusive access to a shared resource, but a timing window exists in which the shared resource can be modified by another code sequence that is operating concurrently. The impact remains unknown. The summary by CVE is:
In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: NFS/localio: Fix a race in nfs_local_open_fh() Once the clp->cl_uuid.lock has been dropped, another CPU could come in and free the struct nfsd_file that was just added. To prevent that from happening, take the RCU read lock before dropping the spin lock.
The advisory is shared at git.kernel.org. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2025-38028 since 04/16/2025. The exploitation is known to be difficult. Technical details are known, but no exploit is available.
The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 258130 (Ubuntu 25.04 : Linux kernel (Azure) vulnerabilities (USN-7721-1)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment.
