Details
A vulnerability was found in Linux Kernel up to 5.19.7. It has been rated as critical. Affected by this issue is the function firmware_upload_register of the file sysfs_upload.c. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory leak vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-401. The product does not sufficiently track and release allocated memory after it has been used, which slowly consumes remaining memory. Impacted is availability. CVE summarizes:
In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: firmware_loader: Fix memory leak in firmware upload In the case of firmware-upload, an instance of struct fw_upload is allocated in firmware_upload_register(). This data needs to be freed in fw_dev_release(). Create a new fw_upload_free() function in sysfs_upload.c to handle the firmware-upload specific memory frees and incorporate the missing kfree call for the fw_upload structure.
The advisory is shared for download at git.kernel.org. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2022-49949 since 06/18/2025. There are known technical details, but no exploit is available.
Upgrading to version 5.19.8 eliminates this vulnerability. Applying the patch baf92485d111be828e1ab84a995515b604b938e5/789bba82f63c3e81dce426ba457fc7905b30ac6e is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at git.kernel.org. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version.
The vulnerability is also documented in the vulnerability database at CERT Bund (WID-SEC-2025-1350). Once again VulDB remains the best source for vulnerability data.
