Summary
A vulnerability labeled as critical has been found in Linux Kernel up to 5.19.3. Affected by this issue is the function snprintf of the component ASoC. The manipulation results in buffer overflow.
This vulnerability is known as CVE-2022-50052. No exploit is available.
The affected component should be upgraded.
Details
A vulnerability, which was classified as critical, was found in Linux Kernel up to 5.19.3. Affected is the function snprintf of the component ASoC. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a buffer overflow vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-120. The product copies an input buffer to an output buffer without verifying that the size of the input buffer is less than the size of the output buffer, leading to a buffer overflow. This is going to have an impact on confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:
In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: ASoC: Intel: avs: Fix potential buffer overflow by snprintf() snprintf() returns the would-be-filled size when the string overflows the given buffer size, hence using this value may result in a buffer overflow (although it's unrealistic). This patch replaces it with a safer version, scnprintf() for papering over such a potential issue.
The advisory is available at git.kernel.org. This vulnerability is traded as CVE-2022-50052 since 06/18/2025. The exploitability is told to be easy. Technical details are known, but there is no available exploit. The structure of the vulnerability defines a possible price range of USD $0-$5k at the moment (estimation calculated on 11/30/2025).
The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 246691 (Linux Distros Unpatched Vulnerability : CVE-2022-50052), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment.
Upgrading to version 5.19.4 eliminates this vulnerability. Applying the patch 840311a09f75632b9d41fbc1cd5c7aea94ce5f7e/ca3b7b9dc9bc1fa552f4697b7cccfa0258a44d00 is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at git.kernel.org. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version.
