Linux Kernel up to 5.18.17/5.19.1 bpf elem_size integer overflow

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Summaryinfo

A vulnerability has been found in Linux Kernel up to 5.18.17/5.19.1 and classified as problematic. The impacted element is the function elem_size of the component bpf. Performing a manipulation results in an unknown weakness. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2022-50167. No exploit is available. The affected component should be upgraded.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability classified as problematic has been found in Linux Kernel up to 5.18.17/5.19.1. This affects the function elem_size of the component bpf. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-190. The product performs a calculation that can produce an integer overflow or wraparound, when the logic assumes that the resulting value will always be larger than the original value. This can introduce other weaknesses when the calculation is used for resource management or execution control. The impact remains unknown. The summary by CVE is:

In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: bpf: fix potential 32-bit overflow when accessing ARRAY map element If BPF array map is bigger than 4GB, element pointer calculation can overflow because both index and elem_size are u32. Fix this everywhere by forcing 64-bit multiplication. Extract this formula into separate small helper and use it consistently in various places. Speculative-preventing formula utilizing index_mask trick is left as is, but explicit u64 casts are added in both places.

It is possible to read the advisory at git.kernel.org. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2022-50167 since 06/18/2025. Technical details of the vulnerability are known, but there is no available exploit. The pricing for an exploit might be around USD $0-$5k at the moment (estimation calculated on 12/01/2025).

The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 270035 (EulerOS 2.0 SP11 : kernel (EulerOS-SA-2025-2198)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment.

Upgrading to version 5.18.18 or 5.19.2 eliminates this vulnerability. Applying the patch 063e092534d4c6785228e5b1eb6e9329f66ccbe4/3c7256b880b3a5aa1895fd169a34aa4224a11862/87ac0d600943994444e24382a87aa19acc4cd3d4 is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at git.kernel.org. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at Tenable (270035) and CERT Bund (WID-SEC-2025-1350). Statistical analysis made it clear that VulDB provides the best quality for vulnerability data.
