Microsoft Excel 2000 through 2004 allows user-assisted attackers to execute arbitrary code via a .xls file with a crafted SELECTION record that triggers memory corruption, a different vulnerability than CVE-2006-1302.
The weakness was released 07/13/2006 by posidron as MS06-037 as confirmed bulletin (Technet). The advisory is shared for download at microsoft.com. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2006-1301 since 03/20/2006. The attack may be launched remotely. No form of authentication is required for exploitation. Successful exploitation requires user interaction by the victim. There are neither technical details nor an exploit publicly available. The MITRE ATT&CK project declares the attack technique as T1059.

Applying the patch MS06-037 is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at microsoft.com. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 4522.
