Linux Kernel up to 5.19.1 ni_set_mc_special_registers buffer overflow

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Summaryinfo

A vulnerability was found in Linux Kernel up to 5.19.1 and classified as critical. Affected by this vulnerability is the function ni_set_mc_special_registers. The manipulation results in buffer overflow. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2022-50185. No exploit is available. It is suggested to upgrade the affected component.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability was found in Linux Kernel up to 5.19.1. It has been classified as critical. Affected is the function ni_set_mc_special_registers. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a buffer overflow vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-120. The product copies an input buffer to an output buffer without verifying that the size of the input buffer is less than the size of the output buffer, leading to a buffer overflow. This is going to have an impact on confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:

In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: drm/radeon: fix potential buffer overflow in ni_set_mc_special_registers() The last case label can write two buffers 'mc_reg_address[j]' and 'mc_data[j]' with 'j' offset equal to SMC_NISLANDS_MC_REGISTER_ARRAY_SIZE since there are no checks for this value in both case labels after the last 'j++'. Instead of changing '>' to '>=' there, add the bounds check at the start of the second 'case' (the first one already has it). Also, remove redundant last checks for 'j' index bigger than array size. The expression is always false. Moreover, before or after the patch 'table->last' can be equal to SMC_NISLANDS_MC_REGISTER_ARRAY_SIZE and it seems it can be a valid value. Detected using the static analysis tool - Svace.

The advisory is available at git.kernel.org. This vulnerability is traded as CVE-2022-50185 since 06/18/2025. The exploitability is told to be easy. Technical details are known, but there is no available exploit. The structure of the vulnerability defines a possible price range of USD $0-$5k at the moment (estimation calculated on 12/01/2025).

The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 247396 (Linux Distros Unpatched Vulnerability : CVE-2022-50185), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment.

Upgrading to version 4.14.291, 4.19.256, 5.4.211, 5.10.137, 5.15.61, 5.18.18 or 5.19.2 eliminates this vulnerability. Applying the patch ea73869df6ef386fc0feeb28ff66742ca835b18f/1f341053852be76f82610ce47a505d930512f05c/db1a9add3f90ff1c641974d5bb910c16b87af4ef/8508d6d23a247c29792ce2fc0df3f3404d6a6a80/deb603c5928e546609c0d5798e231d0205748943/782e413e38dffd37cc85b08b1ccb982adb4a93ce/9faff03617afeced1c4e5daa89e79b3906374342/136f614931a2bb73616b292cf542da3a18daefd5 is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at git.kernel.org. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version.
