Linux Kernel up to 5.19.1 emulation_proc_handler null pointer dereference

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Summaryinfo

A vulnerability labeled as critical has been found in Linux Kernel up to 5.19.1. This impacts the function emulation_proc_handler. Such manipulation leads to null pointer dereference. This vulnerability is referenced as CVE-2022-50206. No exploit is available. The affected component should be upgraded.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability was found in Linux Kernel up to 5.19.1. It has been rated as critical. Affected by this issue is the function emulation_proc_handler. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a null pointer dereference vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-476. A NULL pointer dereference occurs when the application dereferences a pointer that it expects to be valid, but is NULL, typically causing a crash or exit. Impacted is availability. CVE summarizes:

In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: arm64: fix oops in concurrently setting insn_emulation sysctls emulation_proc_handler() changes table->data for proc_dointvec_minmax and can generate the following Oops if called concurrently with itself: | Unable to handle kernel NULL pointer dereference at virtual address 0000000000000010 | Internal error: Oops: 96000006 [#1] SMP | Call trace: | update_insn_emulation_mode+0xc0/0x148 | emulation_proc_handler+0x64/0xb8 | proc_sys_call_handler+0x9c/0xf8 | proc_sys_write+0x18/0x20 | __vfs_write+0x20/0x48 | vfs_write+0xe4/0x1d0 | ksys_write+0x70/0xf8 | __arm64_sys_write+0x20/0x28 | el0_svc_common.constprop.0+0x7c/0x1c0 | el0_svc_handler+0x2c/0xa0 | el0_svc+0x8/0x200 To fix this issue, keep the table->data as &insn->current_mode and use container_of() to retrieve the insn pointer. Another mutex is used to protect against the current_mode update but not for retrieving insn_emulation as table->data is no longer changing.

The advisory is available at git.kernel.org. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2022-50206 since 06/18/2025. The exploitation is known to be difficult. Technical details are known, but there is no available exploit.

The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 271309 (EulerOS 2.0 SP13 : kernel (EulerOS-SA-2025-2264)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment.

Upgrading to version 4.14.291, 4.19.256, 5.4.211, 5.10.137, 5.15.61, 5.18.18 or 5.19.2 eliminates this vulnerability. Applying the patch 9d5fec6ba2e4117d196a8259ab54615ffe562460/b51881b1da57fe9877125dfdd0aac5172958fcfd/04549063d5701976034d8c2bfda3d3a8cbf0409f/353b4673d01c512303c45cf2346f630cda73b5c9/cc69ef95988b9ef2fc730ec452a7441efb90ef5e/6a2fd114678d7fc1b5a0f8865ae98f1c17787455/07022e07017ee5540f5559b0aeb916e8383c1e1a/af483947d472eccb79e42059276c4deed76f99a6 is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at git.kernel.org. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version.
