Details
A vulnerability, which was classified as problematic, was found in pam-config (unknown version). Affected is an unknown code block. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a config vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-16. The impact remains unknown. CVE summarizes:
A Local Privilege Escalation (LPE) vulnerability has been discovered in pam-config within Linux Pluggable Authentication Modules (PAM). This flaw allows an unprivileged local attacker (for example, a user logged in via SSH) to obtain the elevated privileges normally reserved for a physically present, "allow_active" user. The highest risk is that the attacker can then perform all allow_active yes Polkit actions, which are typically restricted to console users, potentially gaining unauthorized control over system configurations, services, or other sensitive operations.
The advisory is shared for download at bugzilla.redhat.com. This vulnerability is traded as CVE-2025-6018 since 06/11/2025. The exploitability is told to be easy. The attack needs to be approached locally. Technical details are unknown but a public exploit is available. The MITRE ATT&CK project declares the attack technique as T1592.004.
The exploit is shared for download at exploit-db.com. It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 240616 (SUSE SLES12 Security Update : pam-config (SUSE-SU-2025:02081-1)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment.
