Details
A vulnerability classified as problematic has been found in Linux Kernel up to 6.6.93/6.12.33/6.15.2/6.16-rc1. Affected is the function prio_tune of the component net_sched. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a race condition vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-362. The product contains a code sequence that can run concurrently with other code, and the code sequence requires temporary, exclusive access to a shared resource, but a timing window exists in which the shared resource can be modified by another code sequence that is operating concurrently. The impact remains unknown. CVE summarizes:
In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: net_sched: prio: fix a race in prio_tune() Gerrard Tai reported a race condition in PRIO, whenever SFQ perturb timer fires at the wrong time. The race is as follows: CPU 0 CPU 1 [1]: lock root [2]: qdisc_tree_flush_backlog() [3]: unlock root | | [5]: lock root | [6]: rehash | [7]: qdisc_tree_reduce_backlog() | [4]: qdisc_put() This can be abused to underflow a parent's qlen. Calling qdisc_purge_queue() instead of qdisc_tree_flush_backlog() should fix the race, because all packets will be purged from the qdisc before releasing the lock.
The advisory is shared for download at git.kernel.org. This vulnerability is traded as CVE-2025-38083 since 04/16/2025. The exploitability is told to be difficult. There are known technical details, but no exploit is available.
The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 241963 (SUSE SLES15 Security Update : kernel (SUSE-SU-2025:02264-1)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment.
Upgrading to version 6.6.94, 6.12.34, 6.15.3 or 6.16-rc2 eliminates this vulnerability. Applying the patch 46c15c9d0f65c9ba857d63f53264f4b17e8a715f/e3f6745006dc9423d2b065b90f191cfa11b1b584/93f9eeb678d4c9c1abf720b3615fa8299a490845/d35acc1be3480505b5931f17e4ea9b7617fea4d3 is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at git.kernel.org. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version.
