CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability was found in notepad-plus-plus Notepad++ up to 8.8.1. It has been rated as critical. Affected by this issue is some unknown processing of the component Installer. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a least privilege violation vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-272. The elevated privilege level required to perform operations such as chroot() should be dropped immediately after the operation is performed. Impacted is confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:

Notepad++ is a free and open-source source code editor. In versions 8.8.1 and prior, a privilege escalation vulnerability exists in the Notepad++ v8.8.1 installer that allows unprivileged users to gain SYSTEM-level privileges through insecure executable search paths. An attacker could use social engineering or clickjacking to trick users into downloading both the legitimate installer and a malicious executable to the same directory (typically Downloads folder - which is known as Vulnerable directory). Upon running the installer, the attack executes automatically with SYSTEM privileges. This issue has been fixed and will be released in version 8.8.2.

The advisory is shared for download at github.com. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2025-49144 since 06/02/2025. The exploitation is known to be easy. The attack needs to be approached locally. There are neither technical details nor an exploit publicly available. The MITRE ATT&CK project declares the attack technique as T1068.
