Details
A vulnerability has been found in Wireshark 0.10/0.10.4/0.10.13/0.99/0.99.1 (Packet Analyzer Software) and classified as critical. This vulnerability affects an unknown code. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a format string vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-134. The product uses a function that accepts a format string as an argument, but the format string originates from an external source. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:
Multiple format string vulnerabilities in Wireshark (aka Ethereal) 0.10.x to 0.99.0 allow remote attackers to cause a denial of service and possibly execute arbitrary code via the (1) ANSI MAP, (2) Checkpoint FW-1, (3) MQ, (4) XML, and (5) NTP dissectors.
The weakness was presented 07/17/2006 by Ilja van Sprundel (Website). The advisory is available at wireshark.org. This vulnerability was named CVE-2006-3628 since 07/17/2006. The exploitation appears to be easy. The attack can be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. The technical details are unknown and an exploit is not available.
It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 22669 (Debian DSA-1127-1 : ethereal - several vulnerabilities), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Debian Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 156229 (Oracle Enterprise Linux Update for Wireshark (ELSA-2006:0726,ELSA-2006:0658,ELSA-2006:0602)).
