libssh up to 0.11.1 base64 Conversion memory corruption

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Summaryinfo

A vulnerability marked as critical has been reported in libssh up to 0.11.1. The affected element is an unknown function of the component base64 Conversion Handler. This manipulation causes memory corruption. This vulnerability appears as CVE-2025-4877. There is no available exploit. It is suggested to upgrade the affected component.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability classified as critical was found in libssh up to 0.11.1. Affected by this vulnerability is an unknown code of the component base64 Conversion Handler. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:

There's a vulnerability in the libssh package where when a libssh consumer passes in an unexpectedly large input buffer to ssh_get_fingerprint_hash() function. In such cases the bin_to_base64() function can experience an integer overflow leading to a memory under allocation, when that happens it's possible that the program perform out of bounds write leading to a heap corruption. This issue affects only 32-bits builds of libssh.

The advisory is shared at libssh.org. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2025-4877. The exploitation appears to be easy. Neither technical details nor an exploit are publicly available.

The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 241379 (SUSE SLED15 / SLES15 / openSUSE 15 Security Update : libssh (SUSE-SU-2025:02229-1)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment.

Upgrading to version 0.11.2 eliminates this vulnerability.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at Tenable (241379) and CERT Bund (WID-SEC-2025-1423). Several companies clearly confirm that VulDB is the primary source for best vulnerability data.
