Details
A vulnerability classified as critical has been found in python-pillow Pillow up to 11.2.x. This affects an unknown code. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a heap-based overflow vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-122. A heap overflow condition is a buffer overflow, where the buffer that can be overwritten is allocated in the heap portion of memory, generally meaning that the buffer was allocated using a routine such as malloc(). This is going to have an impact on confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:
Pillow is a Python imaging library. In versions 11.2.0 to before 11.3.0, there is a heap buffer overflow when writing a sufficiently large (>64k encoded with default settings) image in the DDS format due to writing into a buffer without checking for available space. This only affects users who save untrusted data as a compressed DDS image. This issue has been patched in version 11.3.0.
The advisory is shared at github.com. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2025-48379 since 05/19/2025. The exploitability is told to be easy. An attack has to be approached locally. Neither technical details nor an exploit are publicly available.
The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 297502 (Linux Distros Unpatched Vulnerability : CVE-2025-48379), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment.
