Details
A vulnerability, which was classified as problematic, was found in Linux Kernel up to 8058c88ac0df21239daee54b5934d5c80ca9685f. Affected is the function nf_set_pipapo_avx2 of the component netfilter. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory leak vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-401. The product does not sufficiently track and release allocated memory after it has been used, which slowly consumes remaining memory. This is going to have an impact on confidentiality. CVE summarizes:
In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: netfilter: nf_set_pipapo_avx2: fix initial map fill If the first field doesn't cover the entire start map, then we must zero out the remainder, else we leak those bits into the next match round map. The early fix was incomplete and did only fix up the generic C implementation. A followup patch adds a test case to nft_concat_range.sh.
The advisory is available at git.kernel.org. This vulnerability is traded as CVE-2025-38120 since 04/16/2025. Technical details are known, but there is no available exploit.
The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 249177 (Debian dsa-5973 : affs-modules-6.1.0-37-4kc-malta-di - security update), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment.
Upgrading to version 5.15.186, 6.1.142, 6.6.94, 6.12.34, 6.15.3 or 6.16-rc1 eliminates this vulnerability.
