Details
A vulnerability classified as critical has been found in UFO2000 Svn 1057. This affects the function net::recv_add_unit/ of the file multiplay.cpp. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. This is going to have an impact on confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:
Multiple buffer overflows in multiplay.cpp in UFO2000 svn 1057 allow remote attackers to execute arbitrary code via (1) a long unit name in Net::recv_add_unit,; (2) large values to Net::recv_rules, Net::recv_select_unit, Net::recv_options, and Net::recv_unit_data; and (3) a large mapdata GEODATA structure in Net::recv_map_data.
The bug was discovered 07/16/2006. The weakness was presented 07/24/2006 by Luigi Auriemma (Website). The advisory is shared at vupen.com. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2006-3788 since 07/21/2006. The exploitability is told to be easy. It is possible to initiate the attack remotely. No form of authentication is needed for exploitation. Technical details are known, but no exploit is available.
It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 8 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $0-$5k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 24722 (GLSA-200702-10 : UFO2000: Multiple vulnerabilities), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Gentoo Local Security Checks and running in the context l.
A possible mitigation has been published 8 months after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (27819), Tenable (24722), SecurityFocus (BID 19035†), OSVDB (27341†) and Secunia (SA21091†).
