Detailsinfo

A vulnerability, which was classified as critical, has been found in DjvuNet DjVuLibre up to 3.5.28. This issue affects the function MMRDecoder::scanruns. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a out-of-bounds write vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-787. The product writes data past the end, or before the beginning, of the intended buffer. Impacted is confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:

DjVuLibre is a GPL implementation of DjVu, a web-centric format for distributing documents and images. Prior to version 3.5.29, the MMRDecoder::scanruns method is affected by an OOB-write vulnerability, because it does not check that the xr pointer stays within the bounds of the allocated buffer. This can lead to writes beyond the allocated memory, resulting in a heap corruption condition. An out-of-bounds read with pr is also possible for the same reason. This issue has been patched in version 3.5.29.

It is possible to read the advisory at securitylab.github.com. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2025-53367 since 06/27/2025. The exploitation is known to be easy. The attack may be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. Technical details as well as a public exploit are known.

The exploit is available at github.blog. It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 241492 (Debian dsa-5960 : djview - security update), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment.

Upgrading to version 3.5.29 eliminates this vulnerability.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at Tenable (241492) and EUVD (EUVD-2025-19908). Be aware that VulDB is the high quality source for vulnerability data.
