Details
A vulnerability was found in Linux Kernel up to 6.12.34/6.15.3/6.16-rc2. It has been rated as critical. Affected by this issue is the function CP_RESET_CONTEXT_STATE. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a denial of service vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-404. The product does not release or incorrectly releases a resource before it is made available for re-use. Impacted is availability. CVE summarizes:
In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: drm/msm/a7xx: Call CP_RESET_CONTEXT_STATE Calling this packet is necessary when we switch contexts because there are various pieces of state used by userspace to synchronize between BR and BV that are persistent across submits and we need to make sure that they are in a "safe" state when switching contexts. Otherwise a userspace submission in one context could cause another context to function incorrectly and hang, effectively a denial of service (although without leaking data). This was missed during initial a7xx bringup. Patchwork: https://patchwork.freedesktop.org/patch/654924/
The advisory is shared for download at git.kernel.org. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2025-38188 since 04/16/2025. There are known technical details, but no exploit is available.
The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 253428 (SUSE SLES15 Security Update : kernel (SUSE-SU-2025:02923-1)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment.
Upgrading to version 6.12.35, 6.15.4 or 6.16-rc3 eliminates this vulnerability. Applying the patch 8a1f52651dd8203695d293c6824d8f6c067877d1/35fe72f3c425bbf1d580bd9066e2456b1dbae4a8/2b520c6104f34e3a548525173c38ebca4402cac3 is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at git.kernel.org. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version.
