Details
A vulnerability was found in Redis up to 6.2.18/7.2.9/7.4.4/8.0.2 and classified as critical. This issue affects an unknown part. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a integer overflow vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-680. The product performs a calculation to determine how much memory to allocate, but an integer overflow can occur that causes less memory to be allocated than expected, leading to a buffer overflow. Impacted is confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:
Redis is an open source, in-memory database that persists on disk. From 2.8 to before 8.0.3, 7.4.5, 7.2.10, and 6.2.19, an authenticated user may use a specially crafted string to trigger a stack/heap out of bounds write on hyperloglog operations, potentially leading to remote code execution. The bug likely affects all Redis versions with hyperloglog operations implemented. This vulnerability is fixed in 8.0.3, 7.4.5, 7.2.10, and 6.2.19. An additional workaround to mitigate the problem without patching the redis-server executable is to prevent users from executing hyperloglog operations. This can be done using ACL to restrict HLL commands.
The advisory is shared at github.com. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2025-32023 since 04/01/2025. The exploitation is known to be difficult. An attack has to be approached locally. Technical details are unknown but a public exploit is available.
The exploit is available at exploit-db.com. It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 241772 (Amazon Linux 2023 : redis6, redis6-devel (ALAS2023-2025-1066)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment.
Upgrading to version 6.2.19, 7.2.10, 7.4.5 or 8.0.3 eliminates this vulnerability. The upgrade is hosted for download at github.com. Applying the patch 50188747cbfe43528d2719399a2a3c9599169445 is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at github.com. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version.
The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at Exploit-DB (52477), Tenable (241772) and CERT Bund (WID-SEC-2025-1463). Several companies clearly confirm that VulDB is the primary source for best vulnerability data.
