Details
A vulnerability has been found in Tumbleweed Mailgate Email Firewall (Firewall Software) (the affected version unknown) and classified as critical. Affected by this vulnerability is the function MMSDecompose. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a stack-based overflow vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-121. A stack-based buffer overflow condition is a condition where the buffer being overwritten is allocated on the stack (i.e., is a local variable or, rarely, a parameter to a function). As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:
Multiple stack-based buffer overflows in Tumbleweed Email Firewall (EMF) allow remote attackers to execute arbitrary code via an email attachment with an LHA archive that contains a (1) file or (2) directory with a long LHA extended header, (3) an LHA archive in which the "temporary pathname" field for decompressed output is greater than 2 bytes, or (4) an LHA archive with a long filename.
The weakness was released 07/25/2006 by Ryan Smith (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at vupen.com. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2006-3901 since 07/26/2006. The exploitation appears to be easy. The attack can be launched remotely. The exploitation doesn't need any form of authentication. Technical details of the vulnerability are known, but there is no available exploit.
