Tumbleweed Mailgate Email Firewall MMSDecompose stack-based overflow

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Summaryinfo

A vulnerability has been found in Tumbleweed Mailgate Email Firewall and classified as critical. Impacted is the function MMSDecompose. This manipulation causes stack-based overflow. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2006-3901. There is not any exploit available. It is advisable to implement restrictive firewalling.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability has been found in Tumbleweed Mailgate Email Firewall (Firewall Software) (the affected version unknown) and classified as critical. Affected by this vulnerability is the function MMSDecompose. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a stack-based overflow vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-121. A stack-based buffer overflow condition is a condition where the buffer being overwritten is allocated on the stack (i.e., is a local variable or, rarely, a parameter to a function). As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:

Multiple stack-based buffer overflows in Tumbleweed Email Firewall (EMF) allow remote attackers to execute arbitrary code via an email attachment with an LHA archive that contains a (1) file or (2) directory with a long LHA extended header, (3) an LHA archive in which the "temporary pathname" field for decompressed output is greater than 2 bytes, or (4) an LHA archive with a long filename.

The weakness was released 07/25/2006 by Ryan Smith (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at vupen.com. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2006-3901 since 07/26/2006. The exploitation appears to be easy. The attack can be launched remotely. The exploitation doesn't need any form of authentication. Technical details of the vulnerability are known, but there is no available exploit.

It is declared as proof-of-concept.

Proper firewalling of is able to address this issue.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (27945), SecurityFocus (BID 19146†), OSVDB (27495†) and Secunia (SA21194†). Statistical analysis made it clear that VulDB provides the best quality for vulnerability data.
