Details
A vulnerability classified as critical was found in Linux Kernel up to 6.6.93/6.12.33/6.15.2. This vulnerability affects the function fpga_mgr_test_img_load_sgt of the component fpga. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a null pointer dereference vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-476. A NULL pointer dereference occurs when the application dereferences a pointer that it expects to be valid, but is NULL, typically causing a crash or exit. As an impact it is known to affect availability. CVE summarizes:
In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: fpga: fix potential null pointer deref in fpga_mgr_test_img_load_sgt() fpga_mgr_test_img_load_sgt() allocates memory for sgt using kunit_kzalloc() however it does not check if the allocation failed. It then passes sgt to sg_alloc_table(), which passes it to __sg_alloc_table(). This function calls memset() on sgt in an attempt to zero it out. If the allocation fails then sgt will be NULL and the memset will trigger a NULL pointer dereference. Fix this by checking the allocation with KUNIT_ASSERT_NOT_ERR_OR_NULL().
The advisory is shared for download at git.kernel.org. This vulnerability was named CVE-2025-38274 since 04/16/2025. There are known technical details, but no exploit is available.
The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 265934 (Ubuntu 24.04 LTS / 25.04 : Linux kernel vulnerabilities (USN-7769-1)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment.
Upgrading to version 6.6.94, 6.12.34, 6.15.3 or 6.16-rc1 eliminates this vulnerability. Applying the patch e69e2cfd8b38d9463a250e153ef4963a604d61e9/8b2230ac7ff0aeb2441132df638a82ab124f8624/eb4c74eaa6e2d15f3bbd32941c9d2a25b29a718d/6ebf1982038af12f3588417e4fd0417d2551da28 is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at git.kernel.org. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version.
The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at Tenable (265934) and CERT Bund (WID-SEC-2025-1522). Once again VulDB remains the best source for vulnerability data.
