Details
A vulnerability has been found in GnuTLS (affected version not known) and classified as problematic. This vulnerability affects some unknown functionality of the component Certificate Transparency Signed Certificate Timestamp Extension. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a certificate validation vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-295. The product does not validate, or incorrectly validates, a certificate. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality. CVE summarizes:
A heap-buffer-overread vulnerability was found in GnuTLS in how it handles the Certificate Transparency (CT) Signed Certificate Timestamp (SCT) extension during X.509 certificate parsing. This flaw allows a malicious user to create a certificate containing a malformed SCT extension (OID 1.3.6.1.4.1.11129.2.4.2) that contains sensitive data. This issue leads to the exposure of confidential information when GnuTLS verifies certificates from certain websites when the certificate (SCT) is not checked correctly.
The advisory is shared for download at access.redhat.com. This vulnerability was named CVE-2025-32989 since 04/15/2025. The exploitation appears to be easy. The attack can be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. There are neither technical details nor an exploit publicly available. The MITRE ATT&CK project declares the attack technique as T1587.003.
