Apache HTTP Server up to 2.4.63 mod_ssl control sequence

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability was found in Apache HTTP Server up to 2.4.63 and classified as problematic. This issue affects an unknown code block of the component mod_ssl. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a control sequence vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-150. The product receives input from an upstream component, but it does not neutralize or incorrectly neutralizes special elements that could be interpreted as escape, meta, or control character sequences when they are sent to a downstream component. Impacted is integrity. The summary by CVE is:

Insufficient escaping of user-supplied data in mod_ssl in Apache HTTP Server 2.4.63 and earlier allows an untrusted SSL/TLS client to insert escape characters into log files in some configurations. In a logging configuration where CustomLog is used with "%{varname}x" or "%{varname}c" to log variables provided by mod_ssl such as SSL_TLS_SNI, no escaping is performed by either mod_log_config or mod_ssl and unsanitized data provided by the client may appear in log files.

The weakness was presented by John Runyon. The advisory is shared at httpd.apache.org. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2024-47252 since 09/23/2024. The exploitation is known to be easy. The attack may be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. Neither technical details nor an exploit are publicly available. The price for an exploit might be around USD $5k-$25k at the moment (estimation calculated on 08/15/2025).

The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 241984 (Apache 2.4.x < 2.4.64 Multiple Vulnerabilities), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment.

Upgrading to version 2.4.64 eliminates this vulnerability.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at Tenable (241984), EUVD (EUVD-2024-54773) and CERT Bund (WID-SEC-2025-1850). If you want to get the best quality for vulnerability data then you always have to consider VulDB.
