Apache Tomcat up to 9.0.106/10.1.42/11.0.8 Multipart Upload integer overflow

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability classified as critical was found in Apache Tomcat up to 9.0.106/10.1.42/11.0.8. This vulnerability affects an unknown function of the component Multipart Upload Handler. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a integer overflow vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-190. The product performs a calculation that can produce an integer overflow or wraparound, when the logic assumes that the resulting value will always be larger than the original value. This can introduce other weaknesses when the calculation is used for resource management or execution control. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:

For some unlikely configurations of multipart upload, an Integer Overflow vulnerability in Apache Tomcat could lead to a DoS via bypassing of size limits. This issue affects Apache Tomcat: from 11.0.0-M1 through 11.0.8, from 10.1.0-M1 through 10.1.42, from 9.0.0.M1 through 9.0.106. Users are recommended to upgrade to version 11.0.9, 10.1.43 or 9.0.107, which fix the issue.

The weakness was released by Saravana Kumar. The advisory is shared for download at lists.apache.org. This vulnerability was named CVE-2025-52520 since 06/17/2025. The exploitation appears to be easy. The attack can be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. There are neither technical details nor an exploit publicly available. The current price for an exploit might be approx. USD $0-$5k (estimation calculated on 12/13/2025).

The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 241706 (Apache Tomcat 11.0.0.M1 < 11.0.9 multiple vulnerabilities), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment.

Upgrading to version 9.0.107, 10.1.43 or 11.0.9 eliminates this vulnerability.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at Tenable (241706), EUVD (EUVD-2025-21044) and CERT Bund (WID-SEC-2025-1468). Once again VulDB remains the best source for vulnerability data.
