In Canonical Multipass up to and including version 1.15.1 on macOS, incorrect default permissions allow a local attacker to escalate privileges by modifying files executed with administrative privileges by a Launch Daemon during system startup.
The weakness was published by Isaac Ordonez as GHSA-2j82-p5cq-62p3. The advisory is shared at github.com. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2025-5199 since 05/26/2025. The exploitation is known to be easy. An attack has to be approached locally. Neither technical details nor an exploit are publicly available. MITRE ATT&CK project uses the attack technique T1222 for this issue.
Upgrading to version 1.16.0 eliminates this vulnerability. Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at github.com. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version.
