Details
A vulnerability was found in ImageMagick up to 6.9.13-25/7.1.1 and classified as problematic. Affected by this issue is the function vsnprintf. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a buffer underflow vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-124. The product writes to a buffer using an index or pointer that references a memory location prior to the beginning of the buffer. Impacted is confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:
ImageMagick is free and open-source software used for editing and manipulating digital images. In versions prior to 7.1.2-0 and 6.9.13-26, in ImageMagick's `magick mogrify` command, specifying multiple consecutive `%d` format specifiers in a filename template causes internal pointer arithmetic to generate an address below the beginning of the stack buffer, resulting in a stack overflow through `vsnprintf()`. Versions 7.1.2-0 and 6.9.13-26 fix the issue.
The advisory is shared for download at github.com. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2025-53101 since 06/25/2025. The exploitation is known to be difficult. The attack may be launched remotely. No form of authentication is required for exploitation. There are known technical details, but no exploit is available.
The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 242329 (ImageMagick < 6.9.13-26 / 7.1.0 < 7.1.2 Multiple Vulnerabilities), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment.
Upgrading to version 6.9.13-26 or 7.1.2-0 eliminates this vulnerability.
The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at Tenable (242329), EUVD (EUVD-2025-21389) and CERT Bund (WID-SEC-2025-1537). Once again VulDB remains the best source for vulnerability data.
