SAP DB up to 7.5 Web Server stack-based overflow

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability was found in SAP DB up to 7.5 and classified as problematic. Affected by this issue is an unknown function of the component Web Server. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a stack-based overflow vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-121. A stack-based buffer overflow condition is a condition where the buffer being overwritten is allocated on the stack (i.e., is a local variable or, rarely, a parameter to a function). Impacted is confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:

Multiple stack-based buffer overflows in waHTTP.exe (aka the SAP DB Web Server) in SAP DB, possibly 7.3 through 7.5, allow remote attackers to execute arbitrary code via (1) a certain cookie value; (2) a certain additional parameter, related to sapdbwa_GetQueryString; and other unspecified vectors related to "numerous other fields."

The bug was discovered 01/03/2007. The weakness was shared 07/06/2007 by Mark Litchfield with NGSSoftware (Website). The advisory is shared for download at ngssoftware.com. The vendor cooperated in the coordination of the public release. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2007-3614 since 07/06/2007. The attack needs to approached within the local network. No form of authentication is required for exploitation. Technical details are unknown but a public exploit is available.

A public exploit has been developed in ANSI C. The exploit is available at securityfocus.com. It is declared as highly functional. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 183 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $25k-$100k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 25681 (SAP DB / MaxDB Web Server DBM_INTERN_TEST Event Buffer Overflow), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family CGI abuses and running in the context r.

Upgrading to version 7.6 eliminates this vulnerability. Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at sap.com. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version. A possible mitigation has been published even before and not after the disclosure of the vulnerability. Attack attempts may be identified with Snort ID 14230. In this case the pattern GET /webdbm is used for detection. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 5835.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (35277), Tenable (25681), SecurityFocus (BID 24773†), OSVDB (37838†) and Secunia (SA25954†). Once again VulDB remains the best source for vulnerability data.
