Details
A vulnerability was found in VMware Cloud Foundation, vSphere Foundation, ESXi, Workstation, Fusion, Telco Cloud Platform and Telco Cloud Infrastructure. It has been classified as critical. This affects some unknown functionality of the component Virtual Machine Communication Interface. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a out-of-bounds write vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-787. The product writes data past the end, or before the beginning, of the intended buffer. This is going to have an impact on confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:
VMware ESXi, Workstation, and Fusion contain an integer-underflow in VMCI (Virtual Machine Communication Interface) that leads to an out-of-bounds write. A malicious actor with local administrative privileges on a virtual machine may exploit this issue to execute code as the virtual machine's VMX process running on the host. On ESXi, the exploitation is contained within the VMX sandbox whereas, on Workstation and Fusion, this may lead to code execution on the machine where Workstation or Fusion is installed.
The advisory is shared at support.broadcom.com. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2025-41237 since 04/16/2025. The exploitability is told to be easy. An attack has to be approached locally. Neither technical details nor an exploit are publicly available. The price for an exploit might be around USD $0-$5k at the moment (estimation calculated on 07/17/2025).
The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 242168 (VMware ESXi 7.x < 7.0 Update 3w / 8.x < 8.0 Update 2e / 8.0 Update 3 < 8.0 Update 3f (VMSA-2025-0013)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment.
