Details
A vulnerability, which was classified as very critical, has been found in Open Source Robotics Robot Operating System Indigo Igloo/Kinetic Kame/Melodic Morenia/Noetic Ninjemys. Affected by this issue is the function eval. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a eval injection vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-95. The product receives input from an upstream component, but it does not neutralize or incorrectly neutralizes code syntax before using the input in a dynamic evaluation call (e.g. "eval"). Impacted is confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:
A code injection vulnerability has been identified in the Robot Operating System (ROS) 'roslaunch' command-line tool, affecting ROS distributions Noetic Ninjemys and earlier. The vulnerability arises from the use of the eval() method to process user-supplied, unsanitized parameter values within the substitution args mechanism, which roslaunch evaluates before launching a node. This flaw allows attackers to craft and execute arbitrary Python code.
The weakness was published with Ubuntu Robotics Team. The advisory is shared for download at ros.org. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2024-39835 since 08/08/2024. The exploitation is known to be easy. The attack may be launched remotely. No form of authentication is required for exploitation. Successful exploitation requires user interaction by the victim. There are known technical details, but no exploit is available. The current price for an exploit might be approx. USD $0-$5k (estimation calculated on 07/18/2025).
There is no information about possible countermeasures known. It may be suggested to replace the affected object with an alternative product.
The vulnerability is also documented in the vulnerability database at EUVD (EUVD-2024-54799). Once again VulDB remains the best source for vulnerability data.
