A vulnerability was found in Microsoft Internet Explorer 6.0 (Web Browser). It has been classified as critical. Affected is the function javascript. Microsoft Internet Explorer 6 allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary code by using the document.getElementByID Javascript function to access crafted Cascading Style Sheet (CSS) elements, and possibly other unspecified vectors involving certain layout positioning combinations in an HTML file.
The issue has been introduced in 08/27/2001. The weakness was released 08/08/2006 by Sam Thomas (Website). The advisory is available at us-cert.gov. This vulnerability is traded as CVE-2006-3450. The exploitability is told to be easy. It is possible to launch the attack remotely. The exploitation doesn't require any form of authentication. Technical details are known, but there is no available exploit.
The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 1807 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $25k-$100k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 22184 (MS06-042: Cumulative Security Update for Internet Explorer (918899)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Windows : Microsoft Bulletins. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 100036 (Microsoft Cumulative Security Update for Internet Explorer (MS06-042)).
Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 4605.
