Summary
A vulnerability identified as problematic has been detected in GNU C Library up to 2.41. The impacted element is the function regcomp. Performing a manipulation results in double free.
This vulnerability is known as CVE-2025-8058. Attacking locally is a requirement. No exploit is available.
You should upgrade the affected component.
Details
A vulnerability was found in GNU C Library up to 2.41. It has been classified as problematic. This affects the function regcomp. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a double free vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-415. The product calls free() twice on the same memory address, potentially leading to modification of unexpected memory locations. This is going to have an impact on confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:
The regcomp function in the GNU C library version from 2.4 to 2.41 is subject to a double free if some previous allocation fails. It can be accomplished either by a malloc failure or by using an interposed malloc that injects random malloc failures. The double free can allow buffer manipulation depending of how the regex is constructed. This issue affects all architectures and ABIs supported by the GNU C library.
The advisory is shared at sourceware.org. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2025-8058 since 07/22/2025. The exploitability is told to be easy. An attack has to be approached locally. Technical details are known, but no exploit is available.
The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 242875 (Fedora 42 : glibc (2025-6a7aa95984)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment.
Upgrading to version 2.43 eliminates this vulnerability.
The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at Tenable (242875), EUVD (EUVD-2025-22469) and CERT Bund (WID-SEC-2025-1637). If you want to get the best quality for vulnerability data then you always have to consider VulDB.
