Details
A vulnerability classified as problematic has been found in Linux Kernel up to f133819e24e78f3aaaa00e9fa2b816d5f73fd172. Affected is the function pnfs_update_layout of the component NFSv4/pNFS. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a race condition vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-362. The product contains a code sequence that can run concurrently with other code, and the code sequence requires temporary, exclusive access to a shared resource, but a timing window exists in which the shared resource can be modified by another code sequence that is operating concurrently. The impact remains unknown. CVE summarizes:
In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: NFSv4/pNFS: Fix a race to wake on NFS_LAYOUT_DRAIN We found a few different systems hung up in writeback waiting on the same page lock, and one task waiting on the NFS_LAYOUT_DRAIN bit in pnfs_update_layout(), however the pnfs_layout_hdr's plh_outstanding count was zero. It seems most likely that this is another race between the waiter and waker similar to commit ed0172af5d6f ("SUNRPC: Fix a race to wake a sync task"). Fix it up by applying the advised barrier.
The advisory is shared for download at git.kernel.org. This vulnerability is traded as CVE-2025-38393 since 04/16/2025. The exploitability is told to be difficult. There are known technical details, but no exploit is available.
The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 265984 (Ubuntu Pro FIPS-updates 22.04 LTS : Linux kernel (Azure FIPS) vulnerabilities (USN-7775-1)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment.
Upgrading to version 5.10.240, 5.15.187, 6.1.144, 6.6.97, 6.12.37, 6.15.6 or 6.16-rc5 eliminates this vulnerability. Applying the patch 08287df60bac5b008b6bcdb03053988335d3d282/8846fd02c98da8b79e6343a20e6071be6f372180/e4b13885e7ef1e64e45268feef1e5f0707c47e72/8ca65fa71024a1767a59ffbc6a6e2278af84735e/864a54c1243ed3ca60baa4bc492dede1361f4c83/1f4da20080718f258e189a2c5f515385fa393da6/c01776287414ca43412d1319d2877cbad65444ac is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at git.kernel.org. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version.
