A vulnerability was found in JHipster up to 8.8.x and classified as critical. This issue affects some unknown functionality of the file /api/account. The manipulation of the argument authorities with an unknown input leads to a access control vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-284. JHipster before v.8.9.0 allows privilege escalation via a modified authorities parameter. Upon registering in the JHipster portal and logging in as a standard user, the authorities parameter in the response from the api/account endpoint contains the value ROLE_USER. By manipulating the authorities parameter and changing its value to ROLE_ADMIN, the privilege is successfully escalated to an Admin level. This allowed the access to all admin-related functionalities in the application.
The advisory is shared at github.com. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2025-43712 since 04/17/2025. The exploitation is known to be easy. Technical details are known, but no exploit is available. MITRE ATT&CK project uses the attack technique T1068 for this issue.
Upgrading to version 8.9.0 eliminates this vulnerability.
