A vulnerability was found in Microsoft Internet Explorer 6.0 SP1 (Web Browser) and classified as critical. This issue affects an unknown function in the library imskdic.dll of the component ActiveX Control. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. Microsoft Internet Explorer 6.0 SP1 and possibly other versions allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service and possibly execute arbitrary code by instantiating COM objects as ActiveX controls, including (1) imskdic.dll (Microsoft IME), (2) chtskdic.dll (Microsoft IME), and (3) msoe.dll (Outlook), which leads to memory corruption. NOTE: it is not certain whether the issue is in Internet Explorer or the individual DLL files.

The issue has been introduced in 09/09/2002. The weakness was shared 08/15/2006 by nop (Website). The advisory is shared at xsec.org. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2006-4193 since 08/16/2006. The exploitation is known to be easy. The attack may be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. Technical details as well as a public exploit are known.

It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 1436 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $25k-$100k. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 100044 (Microsoft Internet Explorer Outlook COM Object Denial of Service Vulnerability (MS07-016)).

Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 3979.
